Dismay

All my life I’ve heard people say in the face of some horrible circumstance something similar:

I can’t believe he did it, he was the church elder.

Bobby couldn’t have been involved because he goes to church every Sunday!

Oh for heaven sake! He’s the minister! He couldn’t have done it!

I’ve gone to church with him for 12 years. There is no way he could of had anything to do with it.

Or, ironically, after a conviction, at the sentencing hearing you may hear something like:

Your Honor, my client was the elder of Molestible Fellowship Church for fourteen years.

Your Honor, Bobby skipped bible study class that day in order to minister to that young boy –but things simply got out of hand.

Your Honor, before you pass sentence on Minister Brown, please take into account the many insufferable days he spent conjoaling those young boys into wards of God.

Your Honor, in spite of my client having molested fourteen boys I want to point out what a pillar of the community he was for the last 12 years. Every Sunday he went to church and prayed with his fellowship.

Like the fact that these folks were “religious” somehow makes them less aggrieves to the rest of us is preposterous. How could this even be a mitigating factor? –outside of the fact that it makes them even more sinister. Apparently, I think completely different than most people. If I find out someone has been a man of god then I am automatically suspicious of them -not the other way around.

How does the cloak of religion make someone less of a threat? Less worthy of social wrath after a conviction? How does the fact that someone goes to church make them less suspicious of wrongdoing?

  1. i am very leery of religious people! Its almost as thoug in the examples you gave they feel justified in doing something horrible because they spent “all this time” going out of their way to spread the word of god. i dunno perhaps this is part of why I hate organized religion as well?

  2. Molag Scumflagon couldn’t have been involved because he goes to the goat sacrifice unto Yog Sothoth every solstice! He’s a pillar of the community I tell you!
